(WGTD)---An overnight fire at a million sq. ft. Amazon warehouse in Kenosha emptied out the city's fire stations and led to a mutual aid request.
Firefighters were sent to the Amazon facility just north of the Kenosha Regional Airport at 2 a.m. They found heavy smoke and activated sprinklers. A worker evacuation was already underway.
According to a news release, crews attacked the fire with multiple lines while simultaneously conducting ventilation operations. Air boats from the Fox Lake and Lake Villa fire protection districts were requested to assist.
The release did not identify the origin of the fire, however it says the building sustained "significant smoke and water damage."
A spokesperson from Amazon had nothing more to add other than what the fire department reported.
The building is used for storage to keep Amazon fulfillment centers in the area stocked and can hold up to 40 million items.
In addition to Kenosha firefighters, personnel from the Paris, Newport, Oak Creek and Pleasant Prairie fire departments were sent to the scene. Fire departments from Somers, Lake Villa, Antioch and Waukegan back-filled Kenosha's empty stations.
The Kenosha Parks Department provided fuel support for the air boats that were used during the operation.
360 workers were in the building at the time of the fire. They were bused to other Amazon facilities by Kenosha Transit.
No injuries were reported.
